Pokémon Gold, Silver & Crystal Walkthrough
A shared original Gen2 walkthrough through Johto, Kanto, Mt. Silver, and Red.
Choose Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile, learn the Pokégear basics, and reach Cherrygrove City.
Key items
- Pokégear
- Map Card
- Potion
Important battles
- Early wild Pokémon route checks
Tips
- Cyndaquil is usually the friendliest starter for new players because it has a smoother early Johto route.
- Totodile is the most stable all-around starter and stays useful across Johto and Kanto.
- Chikorita is playable but harder early because several early major fights pressure Grass-types.
- Gen2 time of day matters, so note whether you are playing during day or night.
- Do not plan a full Pokédex from one save file; trading remains important.
Gold / Silver notes
- Gold and Silver use the original paired-version opening and standard three-starter choice.
Crystal notes
- Crystal adds the option to play as a female character and has presentation changes, but the opening route flow is still shared.
Visit Mr. Pokémon, receive the Mystery Egg, meet Professor Oak, and return for the first rival battle.
Key Pokémon
Key items
- Mystery Egg
- Pokédex
Important battles
- First rival battle near Cherrygrove
Tips
- The Mystery Egg introduces Gen2's egg and breeding themes early.
Crystal notes
- Crystal keeps the same early structure while adding later story emphasis around Suicune and Eusine.
Clear Sprout Tower, earn the Zephyr Badge from Falkner, and prepare to receive the Togepi Egg.
Key items
- Zephyr Badge
- HM05 Flash
- Togepi Egg
Important battles
- Elder Li
- Falkner
Tips
- Falkner is the first badge check; Rock or Electric support is helpful if available.
- Chikorita players should be more careful because the first Gym is Flying-focused.
- Sprout Tower is useful for early experience before challenging Falkner.
Gold / Silver notes
- Gold and Silver share the core Violet City progression.
Crystal notes
- Crystal's early Johto flow is similar here.
Stop Team Rocket in Slowpoke Well and earn the Hive Badge from Bugsy.
Key items
- Hive Badge
- Charcoal
Important battles
- Team Rocket grunts
- Bugsy
- Rival battle
Tips
- Bugsy's Scyther is the major threat in Azalea.
- Flying, Fire, and Rock answers are the cleanest ways to control the fight.
- Do not spend your whole plan around Metapod and Kakuna; Scyther is the real check.
Crystal notes
- Crystal can shift some encounter and event context, but do not use remake encounter tables for this guide.
Recover Farfetch'd, obtain Cut, pass through Ilex Forest, and reach Goldenrod City.
Key Pokémon
Key items
- HM01 Cut
- TM02 Headbutt
- Bicycle
Important battles
- Ilex Forest puzzle
Tips
- Route 34 introduces the Day Care, making breeding planning more relevant.
Explore Goldenrod, unlock key city services, and defeat Whitney for the Plain Badge.
Key items
- Plain Badge
- Radio Card
- SquirtBottle
Important battles
- Whitney
Tips
- Whitney's Miltank is one of Johto's most famous difficulty spikes.
- Rollout can snowball quickly, Milk Drink extends the fight, and Attract can waste turns if your attacker is vulnerable.
- The in-game Machop trade, Geodude, status moves, and accuracy control are practical answers.
- Goldenrod has several long-term systems: Radio Card, Game Corner, Bike Shop, and Day Care access nearby.
Reach Ecruteak, release the legendary beasts from Burned Tower, and earn the Fog Badge from Morty.
Key items
- Fog Badge
- HM03 Surf
- Itemfinder
Important battles
- Rival battle in Burned Tower
- Morty
Tips
- Do not expect roaming legendary beasts to behave like static fights.
- Normal-type moves do not hit Ghost-types, so check your moves before entering Morty's Gym.
- Bite, Confusion-style Psychic coverage, status control, and sturdy special attackers are useful into Morty's team.
Gold / Silver notes
- Raikou, Entei, and Suicune begin roaming after the Burned Tower event.
Crystal notes
- Crystal expands Suicune's role and introduces Eusine as a recurring character tied to the legendary beasts.
Meet Jasmine, climb the Lighthouse, and learn that you need medicine from Cianwood.
Key Pokémon
Key items
- Good Rod
- HM04 Strength
Important battles
- Lighthouse trainers
Tips
- This step sets up the Cianwood crossing and the Jasmine badge path.
- The intended flow is Lighthouse first, then Surf to Cianwood, beat Chuck, get Fly, bring back the SecretPotion, and then fight Jasmine.
Cross the sea route, obtain medicine, defeat Chuck, and unlock Fly.
Key Pokémon
Key items
- Storm Badge
- HM02 Fly
- SecretPotion
Important battles
- Chuck
Tips
- Bring answers for Fighting-types and enough healing for the sea route.
- After Chuck, return the SecretPotion to Olivine's Lighthouse before challenging Jasmine.
Investigate Lake of Rage, meet Lance, clear the Team Rocket hideout, and defeat Pryce.
Key items
- Red Scale
- HM06 Whirlpool
- Glacier Badge
Important battles
- Red Gyarados
- Team Rocket hideout
- Pryce
Tips
- Treat Lake of Rage, Red Gyarados, Rocket Hideout, and the later Radio Tower takeover as one connected Team Rocket arc.
- Whirlpool is a Gen2 HM and matters for later Johto progression.
Crystal notes
- Crystal preserves the Lake of Rage story while adding its own Suicune plot beats elsewhere.
Return to Goldenrod, clear the Radio Tower and Underground, and stop Team Rocket's comeback.
Key Pokémon
Key items
- Card Key
- Basement Key
- Clear Bell
Important battles
- Rocket executives
Tips
- Expect several battles in a row; stock healing items before entering.
Crystal notes
- Crystal's Clear Bell ties into its expanded Suicune storyline.
Reach Blackthorn, defeat Clair, complete the Dragon's Den test, and earn the Rising Badge.
Key Pokémon
Key items
- Rising Badge
- HM07 Waterfall
- Dragon Fang
Important battles
- Clair
- Dragon's Den test
Tips
- Clair's Kingdra has very few weaknesses in Gen2.
- Ice-type moves are valuable into Dragonair, while Kingdra needs broader planning because it is not simply weak to Ice.
- Bring healing and avoid entering Dragon's Den underprepared after the badge fight.
Crystal notes
- Crystal changes some Dragon's Den story presentation, so use Crystal notes if the sequence feels slightly different from Gold/Silver.
Cross toward Indigo Plateau and complete the final rival battle before the Elite Four.
Key Pokémon
Key items
- Full Restore
- Max Revive
Important battles
- Rival battle before Indigo Plateau
Tips
- Use this stretch to finalize team levels and item planning.
Defeat Will, Koga, Bruno, Karen, and Champion Lance to enter the postgame.
Key items
- Champion title
Important battles
- Will
- Koga
- Bruno
- Karen
- Lance
Tips
- Koga is an Elite Four member in Gen2, not the Fuchsia Gym Leader.
- Lance's Dragonite-heavy team makes Ice coverage extremely valuable.
- Electric coverage helps into Gyarados, while Rock or Water support can help with Charizard and Aerodactyl.
Board the S.S. Aqua, reach Kanto, and begin the second-region badge route.
Tips
- Gen2 Kanto is a postgame region with eight more badges, not a full Kanto campaign remake.
- The Kanto badge order is looser than Johto, but sidequests still gate important progress.
Collect Kanto badges across Vermilion, Saffron, Celadon, Fuchsia, Cerulean, Pewter, Cinnabar/Seafoam, and Viridian.
Important battles
- Lt. Surge
- Sabrina
- Erika
- Janine
- Misty
Tips
- Do not reuse original Kanto team assumptions: Janine replaces Koga and Blue becomes the Viridian Gym Leader.
- Track all eight Kanto badges; they are required before the final Mt. Silver route opens.
Restore power, recover the stolen Machine Part, and unlock Radio functionality needed for Kanto progression.
Key Pokémon
Key items
- Machine Part
- EXPN Card
Important battles
- Cerulean Rocket encounter
Tips
- The radio sidequest is important for waking Snorlax.
Finish remaining Kanto routes, collect missing badges, and prepare for Blue.
Key items
- Kanto badges
Important battles
- Misty
- Brock
- Blaine
Tips
- Kanto order is more open than Johto, so use badges and sidequests as route anchors.
Defeat Blue in Viridian City and complete the 16-badge challenge.
Key items
- Earth Badge
Important battles
- Blue
Tips
- Blue uses a mixed team rather than a single type specialty.
After completing the Johto and Kanto badge routes, gain access to Mt. Silver.
Key Pokémon
Key items
- Mt. Silver access
Tips
- Treat Mt. Silver as the final preparation zone before Red, not a casual route.
- Use this point to finalize coverage for Pikachu, Espeon, Snorlax, Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise.
Challenge Red, the final superboss of the original Gold, Silver, and Crystal postgame.
Important battles
- Red
Tips
- Red's team is much higher level than the Elite Four; enter with a prepared team and recovery items.
- Pikachu is high-level but frail; Snorlax is usually the bigger durability problem.
- Bring multiple coverage types rather than trying to sweep with one matchup.
