How the Gen II versions fit together

Gold and Silver are the original paired Generation II games. Crystal is the enhanced third version with Suicune story focus, Eusine, Battle Tower, animated sprites, and the female player character. HeartGold and SoulSilver are separate Generation IV remakes and are not covered here.

Choose Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile, learn the Pokégear basics, and reach Cherrygrove City.

Tips

  • Cyndaquil is usually the friendliest starter for new players because it has a smoother early Johto route.
  • Totodile is the most stable all-around starter and stays useful across Johto and Kanto.
  • Chikorita is playable but harder early because several early major fights pressure Grass-types.
  • Gen2 time of day matters, so note whether you are playing during day or night.
  • Do not plan a full Pokédex from one save file; trading remains important.
