Pokémon Gold, Silver & Crystal Exclusive Pokémon

Plan version availability, trades, starters, and Crystal availability gaps.

Introduction

Gold and Silver use paired version exclusives, while Crystal has its own availability changes. Use this page for conservative trade planning rather than as a route-by-route encounter database. Crystal is not the definitive availability version: it adds some options, removes others, and still requires trading for completion.

Pokémon that require trading

  • One original Gen2 game is not enough to complete the Pokédex through normal play.
  • Starter Pokémon require trading for completion unless using multiple saves or external events.
  • Trade evolutions remain important, including familiar lines such as Kadabra, Machoke, Graveler, and Haunter.
  • Held-item trade evolutions are a major Gen2 addition, so item planning and trade access both matter.
  • Crystal has its own availability profile and should not be treated as a complete superset of Gold and Silver.
  • Important Crystal gaps include the Mareep line, Vulpix line, Mankey line, Remoraid line, and Girafarig.
  • Crystal also makes some lines easier, including Growlithe and Meowth compared with one of the paired versions.
Which version should you choose?
  • Want Ampharos for the main story? Gold or Silver is easier because the Mareep line is not normally obtainable in Crystal.
  • Want Suicune story focus, Battle Tower, and the female player character? Crystal is the best fit.
  • Want Growlithe? Choose Gold or Crystal.
  • Want Vulpix? Choose Silver.
  • Want Mankey? Choose Gold.
  • Want Meowth? Choose Silver or Crystal.
  • Want Pokédex completion? Every original Gen2 version still requires trading.

FAQ

Can you complete the Gen2 Pokédex with one game?

No. Normal completion requires trading for version exclusives, other starters, trade evolutions, and availability gaps. Celebi is also not a standard normal gameplay catch.

Which Pokémon are exclusive to Gold?

Gold-side planning examples include Mankey, Growlithe, Spinarak, Gligar, Teddiursa, and Mantine. Use the table as a conservative planning aid, not a full route encounter database.

Which Pokémon are exclusive to Silver?

Silver-side planning examples include Vulpix, Ledyba, Delibird, Phanpy, and Skarmory. Use the table for trade planning and check detailed encounter data when available.

Is Crystal missing some Gold/Silver Pokémon?

Yes. Crystal changes availability and is not simply Gold and Silver combined. Crystal players should especially plan around Mareep, Vulpix, Mankey, Remoraid, and Girafarig gaps.

Do you need trading in Gen2?

Yes. Trading is required for version exclusives, starters, and several evolutions, including new held-item trade evolutions introduced in Gen2.
