Pokémon Gold, Silver & Crystal Elite Four

Prepare for Will, Koga, Bruno, Karen, and Champion Lance.

Preparation checklist

  • Bring a balanced team around the low-to-mid 40s or higher for a comfortable first clear.
  • Carry healing and status recovery before entering; you cannot freely leave between fights.
  • Prepare answers for Psychic, Poison, Fighting, Dark, and Lance's Dragon-heavy team.
  • Ice coverage is extremely valuable against Lance.
  • Remember that Koga is now Elite Four, while Janine is Fuchsia Gym Leader.
Elite Four
Will
Lv. 40-44

Battle notes

  • Dark-type options are especially useful because Dark is new in Gen2.
Elite Four
Koga
Lv. 41-45

Battle notes

  • Do not confuse this role with Gen1 Koga; in Gen2 he has moved to the Elite Four.
Elite Four
Bruno
Lv. 42-46

Battle notes

  • Psychic and Flying support are strong, but account for Onix separately.
Elite Four
Karen
Lv. 43-48

Battle notes

  • Karen showcases Dark-type identity in Gen2; do not rely only on Psychic coverage.
Champion
Lance
Lv. 46-52

Battle notes

  • Ice coverage is the cleanest way to handle multiple Dragonite. Electric coverage helps against Gyarados.

FAQ

What level should I be for the Elite Four in Gen2?

A team in the low-to-mid 40s can clear with good coverage and items, but higher levels make Lance much safer.

Can you leave after entering the Elite Four?

No. Once you start the Elite Four challenge, you need to win through the sequence or lose. Stock items first.

Who is the Champion in Gold, Silver, and Crystal?

Lance is the Champion in the original Gen2 games.

What types are best for the Elite Four?

Dark, Psychic, Flying, Electric, Water, and especially Ice coverage are valuable across the full sequence.

Should I catch legendary Pokémon before the Elite Four?

Legendary Pokémon can help, but they are not required. A balanced trained team with good coverage is enough.
