How Pokémon Categories Work

NationalDex organizes these collections by the kind of relationship they describe. Some identify an official group, while others describe a form, a battle mechanic, or a community-defined family pattern. The labels are useful browsing tools, but they do not all operate at the same level: one may apply to an entire species, another to one regional form, and another only to a temporary state in battle.

Official and Community Categories

Legendary Pokémon, Mythical Pokémon, Ultra Beasts, and similar groups are identified through game data, official terminology, or a clear role in the series. Their definitions and availability still vary, so one label should not be substituted for another. Pseudo-legendary, by contrast, is a long-established community term for specific three-stage evolution families whose final stages follow a familiar stat and growth pattern; it is not an official Pokémon classification.

Forms Are Not Always Evolutions

Regional Forms are lasting regional variants of a species and may have their own typing, Abilities, or evolution options. Mega Evolution is a temporary battle transformation, while Gigantamax is a special Dynamax appearance available only to eligible individuals of certain species. Neither mechanic adds an ordinary permanent stage to a family. Shiny coloration is different again: it changes a Pokémon’s color palette, not its species, typing, or position in an evolution chain.

Categories Can Overlap

A Pokémon can appear in more than one collection for different reasons. Koraidon and Miraidon are both Legendary Pokémon and Paradox Pokémon, while most other Paradox Pokémon are not classified as Legendary. Charizard belongs to a Starter evolution family and also has Mega Evolution and Gigantamax forms. These overlaps are intentional rather than duplicate classifications. They help users move from a broad species group to the exact form, transformation, or encounter that a dedicated guide documents.

Pokémon categories organize species or forms by traits such as rarity, story identity, origin, evolution family, regional variation, or a special battle mechanic. The meaning depends on the category, so not every collection represents an official classification.

No. Legendary Pokémon and Mythical Pokémon are distinct classifications. Mythical Pokémon have traditionally been associated with special distributions or limited acquisition, while Legendary Pokémon more often appear in major story or post-game encounters.

No. Ultra Beasts are a separate group of extradimensional Pokémon associated with Ultra Space. They should not normally be treated as Legendary Pokémon.

Most Paradox Pokémon are not Legendary Pokémon. Koraidon and Miraidon are the main exceptions: they are both Legendary Pokémon and Paradox Pokémon. Other Paradox species, including Great Tusk, Iron Valiant, Roaring Moon, and Iron Hands, are not classified as Legendary.

Regional Forms are persistent variants adapted to a particular region and can have different types, Abilities, or evolution paths. Mega Evolution is a temporary transformation used during battle by specific Pokémon.
