Pokémon Black and White Seasons Guide
Use Gen5's monthly season cycle for routes, encounters, Deerling forms and items.
Gen5 changes season at the start of each real-world month, cycling spring, summer, autumn and winter three times per year. Seasons change scenery, some route access, Deerling and Sawsbuck forms, and selected encounters or items.
Requirements
Check the Nintendo DS system month and the in-game season banner.
Re-enter an area after the month changes so maps and encounters update.
Monthly season cycle
Season calendar
| Season | Months |
|---|---|
| Spring | January, May, September |
| Summer | February, June, October |
| Autumn | March, July, November |
| Winter | April, August, December |
What seasons change
- Snow can create or block paths in selected areas such as Twist Mountain.
- Leaf piles and seasonal scenery can alter route navigation or item access.
- Encounter tables change in selected locations rather than universally.
- Deerling and Sawsbuck display the current season form; the form is cosmetic and does not create a separate species.
Black and White versus the sequels
Both game groups use the monthly system, but their routes, regional Pokédex and accessible areas differ. Always check the selected game's encounter table rather than assuming one seasonal location applies identically to both stories.
Changing the system date
Changing the Nintendo DS date can move the game to a different month, but clock changes may affect time-based features and daily events. Save safely, restart the game and verify the season banner instead of assuming the map updates immediately.

Does winter change every route?
No. Seasonal visuals are widespread, but navigation and encounter changes only occur in specific locations.
