How to Get the National Pokédex in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum
Complete the correct Sinnoh Pokédex sighting requirement for your version, then meet Professors Rowan and Oak.
Become Champion and register every required Sinnoh Pokédex species as Seen. Diamond/Pearl require the first 150 entries and do not require Manaphy; Platinum requires all 210 entries, including Manaphy. Return to Professor Rowan's lab in Sandgem Town, where Professor Oak upgrades the Pokédex.
Requirements
Defeat the Elite Four and Champion Cynthia
Diamond/Pearl: see Sinnoh Pokédex entries #001–#150
Platinum: see all 210 entries in the expanded Sinnoh Pokédex
Visit Professor Rowan's laboratory in Sandgem Town after completing the sightings
Seen is enough; caught is not required
The upgrade checks Pokédex sightings, not ownership. Trainer battles, static encounters, books, and ordinary wild encounters can all register a species as Seen. Version-exclusive species needed for the regional checklist are generally shown by NPC Trainers, so trading is not required merely to unlock the National Pokédex.
Open the Sinnoh Pokédex in numerical mode and look for blank entries. A blank number identifies what must still be seen; compare it with nearby numbers instead of trying to catch every available species.

| Platinum | 210 | All 210 | Required as Seen | Rowan's lab after Champion |
Frequently missed Sinnoh entries
- Drifloon: appears at Valley Windworks on Friday; Fantina's Gym can also provide the required sighting depending on version and battles completed.
- Unown: visit Solaceon Ruins if no Trainer battle registered it.
- Riolu: complete Riley's Iron Island route and hatch the Egg, or register it through an appropriate Trainer battle.
- Rotom: in Diamond/Pearl, Rotom is outside the first 150 required Sinnoh Pokédex entries and is not needed for the National Pokédex upgrade. In Platinum, Rotom is part of the expanded 210-entry checklist and can be encountered at night by inspecting the television in the Old Chateau.
- Lake guardians: interact with Uxie and Azelf and begin Mesprit's roaming event; catching them is unnecessary.
- Box legendaries: Celestic Town's elder can show the opposite Diamond/Pearl mascot entry. Platinum's story and post-game routes cover Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina sightings.
- Manaphy: not required in Diamond/Pearl. In Platinum, read the book in Mr. Backlot's room at the Pokémon Mansion to register it as Seen.
