Quick Answer

In Diamond and Pearl, obtain the National Pokédex, enter Spring Path from Route 214, and clear Turnback Cave to find level 70 Altered Forme Giratina. In Platinum, Giratina is a mandatory story encounter at level 47 in the Distortion World and appears in Origin Forme while there.

Requirements

Diamond/Pearl: Champion status and the National Pokédex

Platinum: reach the Spear Pillar and Distortion World story climax

A Pokémon that can inflict Sleep or Paralysis without causing residual damage

Dusk Balls, Ultra Balls, Timer Balls, healing items, and a save before the encounter

Diamond and Pearl: Turnback Cave

  1. Unlock Spring Path

After receiving the National Pokédex, use the newly opened path from Route 214 to reach Sendoff Spring and the entrance to Turnback Cave.

  2. Read the room pattern

Turnback Cave rearranges rooms as you move. Your objective is to find three numbered pillars before entering 30 rooms; backtracking does not create a normal fixed map.

  3. Use landmarks, not compass directions

Choose doors while tracking the pillar count and room count. Reaching the third pillar leads to Giratina's chamber; taking too many rooms resets the attempt toward the entrance.

  4. Catch level 70 Giratina

Save before approaching. Giratina is in Altered Forme. Sleep or Paralysis and Dusk Balls are reliable cave options; avoid recoil, confusion, poison, and burn when its HP is low. In original Diamond/Pearl, defeating or fleeing from it does not provide Platinum's later Hall of Fame recovery, so reload the pre-battle save.

Platinum: Distortion World

  1. Follow Cynthia from Spear Pillar

The story sends you through the Distortion World after Team Galactic's climax. Complete the platform route, Lake Guardian boulder puzzle, and Cyrus battle.

  2. Save before Giratina

Giratina waits at level 47 in Origin Forme. Bring enough healing and balls before entering because the dungeon has no normal wild encounters for training.

  3. Use the later recovery encounter if needed

If Giratina is defeated or avoided during the story, it can later be encountered through Turnback Cave. This prevents the main story from permanently removing the catch.

  4. Collect the Griseous Orb later

After the story, return through Turnback Cave to the accessible part of the Distortion World and collect the Griseous Orb. It keeps Giratina in Origin Forme outside the Distortion World.

Common Mistakes and Troubleshooting

Using a fixed room map for Turnback Cave even though its rooms rearrange.

Applying Platinum's level 47 Distortion World encounter to Diamond or Pearl.

Using poison, burn, recoil, or confusion that can knock Giratina out unexpectedly.

Assuming Origin Forme remains outside the Distortion World without the Griseous Orb.
