Quick Answer

Use Cut to enter the Old Chateau in Eterna Forest, go to the upstairs room with a television, and inspect it at night between 8:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. Diamond/Pearl require the National Pokédex and give a level 15 Rotom; Platinum allows the encounter earlier at level 20.

Requirements

Cut and access to Eterna Forest

Nighttime on the Nintendo DS clock: 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.

Diamond/Pearl only: National Pokédex

Platinum forms only: the historically event-distributed Secret Key

Old Chateau encounter

  1. Enter from Eterna Forest

Use Cut near the northern forest exit and enter the Old Chateau. Climb to the second floor and follow the corridor of bedrooms.

  2. Find the television

Enter the room containing the active television. Other haunted-house events are atmospheric and do not replace this encounter trigger.

  3. Check the time and Pokédex condition

Interact between 8:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. Diamond and Pearl also require the National Pokédex; Platinum does not.

  4. Catch Rotom

The television starts a static battle: level 15 in Diamond/Pearl and level 20 in Platinum. Save first because the encounter is limited.

Platinum appliance forms

The Secret Key opens Rotom's Room in the Team Galactic Eterna Building. It was a limited event Key Item in original Platinum, so a standard modern playthrough cannot obtain it through ordinary in-game progression.

The five appliances create Heat, Wash, Frost, Fan, and Mow Rotom and teach Overheat, Hydro Pump, Blizzard, Air Slash, and Leaf Storm respectively. In Generation IV, every appliance form remains Electric/Ghost. Fire, Water, Ice, Flying, and Grass secondary typings were introduced later and must not be applied to DPP battles.

FAQ

What time does Rotom appear in the Old Chateau?

Rotom's television encounter is available at night from 8:00 p.m. through 4:00 a.m. on the game clock.

Do you need the National Pokédex for Rotom?

Diamond and Pearl require it. Platinum allows the level 20 Rotom encounter before the National Pokédex.

Is Rotom a Legendary or Mythical Pokémon?

No. Its special encounter and legendary battle music caused confusion, but Rotom is not classified as Legendary or Mythical.

Can you unlock Rotom forms without the Secret Key?

Not through normal original Platinum gameplay. Rotom's Room requires the historically event-distributed Secret Key.

What types are Rotom's forms in Platinum?

All five appliance forms are Electric/Ghost in Generation IV. Their changed secondary typings begin in Generation V.
