How to Catch Cresselia in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum
Start the Fullmoon Island event, collect the Lunar Wing, and track the roaming Cresselia across Sinnoh.
After obtaining the National Pokédex, visit Sailor Eldritch's house in Canalave City, speak to the sick child, and sail to Fullmoon Island. Cresselia leaves a Lunar Wing and begins roaming Sinnoh; track it with the Pokétch Marking Map and intercept it on matching routes.
Requirements
National Pokédex
Access to Canalave City and Sailor Eldritch's house
The Pokétch Marking Map app for practical tracking
A fast lead, trapping strategy, status move, and Quick Balls
Start and complete the Lunar Wing event
Visit the sailor's family
After receiving the National Pokédex, enter the house beside the Canalave ship and speak with Sailor Eldritch's family about the child's nightmare.
Sail to Fullmoon Island
Accept Eldritch's trip and follow the short island path. Cresselia is visible in the clearing, but this is not the capture battle.
Interact with Cresselia
Cresselia departs, leaves the Lunar Wing behind, and begins roaming throughout Sinnoh. Pick up the wing and return it to the child to finish the story event.
Track its map position
Open Marking Map and watch Cresselia's icon. Crossing between two adjacent routes makes it change position; alternate at a route boundary until it enters your current route, then search the grass.
Control the roaming battle
Cresselia usually flees after one turn. A faster Mean Look user or Shadow Tag can prevent escape, but Arena Trap does not work because Cresselia has Levitate. Sleep does not stop the scripted flee by itself.
Roaming battle rules
- Cresselia's remaining HP and non-volatile status persist between roaming encounters.
- It can flee even while asleep, so pair status with a valid trapping effect if possible.
- Quick Balls are strongest on the first turn. Dusk Balls are situational, while Ultra Balls are a general fallback.
- Fullmoon Island and Cresselia are separate from Darkrai's event-only Member Card and Newmoon Island sequence.
- The Lunar Wing is used by the story to wake the child; it is not a held capture item.
Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum differences
Cresselia's National Pokédex requirement, Fullmoon Island event, level 50 roaming encounter, persistent HP and status, and Lunar Wing story function are shared across original Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. The main practical differences come from each version's available team members and Pokétch app progression, not from a different Cresselia capture method.

Common Mistakes and Troubleshooting
Expecting a static capture battle on Fullmoon Island.
Using Arena Trap even though Cresselia's Levitate makes it immune to the ability.
Assuming Sleep alone prevents a roaming Pokémon from fleeing.
Confusing Fullmoon Island with Darkrai's event-only Newmoon Island.

FAQ
Where does Cresselia go after Fullmoon Island?
It begins roaming between routes across Sinnoh. Its current position can be viewed with the Pokétch Marking Map app.
How do you track Cresselia?
Use Marking Map, move repeatedly between adjacent routes until its icon reaches your route, then search the local grass without flying away.
Does Cresselia keep its damage and status?
Yes. Its remaining HP and non-volatile status condition persist between roaming encounters.
Can Cresselia flee while asleep?
Yes. Sleep does not disable the roaming flee behavior, so use a compatible trapping strategy when possible.
Is the Lunar Wing consumed?
The Lunar Wing is handed over during the Canalave story to wake the child. It is not retained as a reusable Key Item.
