Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald Legendary Pokémon Guide

Plan Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Latios, Latias, and event-only mythical notes for Jirachi and Deoxys.

Hoenn legendary and mythical planning

Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald split legendary availability by story focus, post-game mechanics, roaming behavior, and event-only mythical distributions. Use this page to plan captures without assuming all versions work the same way.

GroudonGroudon#383G

Version availability

Main legendary in Ruby; available in Emerald through post-game Terra Cave mechanics.

Location

Cave of Origin in Ruby story context; Terra Cave in Emerald post-game.

Unlock / preparation

Bring Ultra Balls, status, healing, and a team that can survive strong Ground/Fire-style pressure.

Common mistake

Do not assume Emerald handles Groudon the same way Ruby does; Emerald moves it into post-game cave mechanics.

KyogreKyogre#382W

Version availability

Main legendary in Sapphire; available in Emerald through post-game Marine Cave mechanics.

Location

Cave of Origin in Sapphire story context; Marine Cave in Emerald post-game.

Unlock / preparation

Prepare Electric/Grass pressure carefully, but avoid knocking it out before applying status.

Common mistake

Do not enter with only fragile Water-weak teammates; Kyogre can punish poor defensive planning.

RayquazaRayquaza#384DF

Version availability

Major story role in Emerald; Sky Pillar encounter. Also associated with post-game Sky Pillar context in Ruby/Sapphire.

Location

Sky Pillar.

Unlock / preparation

Bring status, many balls, healing, and a plan for Dragon/Flying pressure.

Common mistake

Sky Pillar navigation and capture prep are separate problems; do not arrive understocked.

RegirockRegirock#377R

Version availability

Unlocked after the Sealed Chamber puzzle.

Location

Desert Ruins.

Unlock / preparation

Bring the Regi prerequisites first, then status and sturdy capture support.

Common mistake

Trying the ruin before solving Sealed Chamber will not work.

RegiceRegice#378I

Version availability

Unlocked after the Sealed Chamber puzzle.

Location

Island Cave.

Unlock / preparation

Prepare for a long capture and bring safe chip damage.

Common mistake

Players often miss that each Regi ruin has its own post-unlock puzzle interaction.

RegisteelRegisteel#379S

Version availability

Unlocked after the Sealed Chamber puzzle.

Location

Ancient Tomb.

Unlock / preparation

Bring status and enough healing for a defensive capture battle.

Common mistake

Do not confuse unlocking the sealed rooms with automatically starting the encounter.

LatiosLatios#381DP

Version availability

Roaming legendary behavior with version differences; Emerald asks the player to choose after the Champion.

Location

Roaming across Hoenn after unlock conditions.

Unlock / preparation

Use trapping or sleep/paralysis plans and expect repeated short encounters.

Common mistake

Roamers can flee. Save planning and encounter control matter more than a single high-damage move.

LatiasLatias#380DP

Version availability

Roaming legendary behavior with version differences; Emerald asks the player to choose after the Champion.

Location

Roaming across Hoenn after unlock conditions.

Unlock / preparation

Use trapping or sleep/paralysis plans and expect repeated short encounters.

Common mistake

Track the roamer patiently; trying to finish the capture in one encounter is a common frustration point.

Jirachi and Deoxys are event-only goals

Jirachi and Deoxys are mythical/event Pokémon in the original Gen 3 context. Do not treat them as standard story captures in a normal Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald playthrough.

FAQ

Can you catch both Groudon and Kyogre in Emerald?

Yes. Emerald makes Groudon and Kyogre available through post-game Terra Cave and Marine Cave mechanics after the main story.

Are Jirachi and Deoxys normal legendary catches?

No. In the original Gen 3 context, Jirachi and Deoxys are mythical/event Pokémon and are not standard story captures.

How do Latios and Latias work in Emerald?

Emerald uses a post-Champion choice that determines which Lati roams Hoenn. Roamers can flee, so trapping or status plans are helpful.

This guide covers the original Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald for Game Boy Advance. It keeps Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire remake mechanics, encounter changes, and story revisions separate from the original Hoenn games.
