Quick Answer

After becoming Champion and unlocking the Battle Zone, travel through the Survival Area and Route 227 to Stark Mountain. Complete Buck's Magma Stone event, finish the version-specific follow-up, and return to the deepest chamber. Heatran is level 70 in Diamond/Pearl and level 50 in Platinum.

Requirements

Champion status and access to the Battle Zone

National Pokédex access for the full post-game route

Rock Climb, Surf, and Strength support for Stark Mountain travel

A prepared team for a Fire/Steel legendary and a save at the chamber

Stark Mountain route

  1. Reach the Survival Area

Sail to the Battle Zone after the League, travel from the Fight Area to the Survival Area, then continue through Route 227 toward Stark Mountain.

  2. Meet Buck inside

Navigate the first area and join Buck. While he accompanies you, battles become paired encounters and he heals your party after combat.

  3. Reach the Magma Stone chamber

Use the movable boulders and branching paths to reach the deepest room. Buck takes the Magma Stone, but Heatran does not appear yet.

  4. Complete the follow-up

In Diamond and Pearl, speak with Buck at the Survival Area so he returns the Magma Stone. Platinum adds the Team Galactic remnant plot involving Charon and Looker before the stone is restored.

  5. Return to the chamber

Retrace Stark Mountain after the story is resolved. Heatran now waits in the deepest room: level 70 in Diamond/Pearl or level 50 in Platinum.

Capture preparation

  • Heatran is Fire/Steel in Generation IV, making Ground attacks extremely dangerous; use False Swipe or controlled neutral damage instead of a strong Earthquake.
  • Sleep and Paralysis improve consistency. Avoid poison, burn, recoil, and weather damage when its HP is low.
  • Dusk Balls work well inside Stark Mountain; Timer Balls improve during a long battle.
  • If the chamber is empty, confirm that Buck or the Platinum Charon/Looker sequence has been completed outside the mountain.

Expecting Heatran during the first visit while Buck still has the Magma Stone.

Leaving the Survival Area follow-up unfinished in Diamond or Pearl.

Leaving the Charon and Looker sequence unfinished in Platinum.
